I saw your story on the news and I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Both of my sons just joined the Marines and are at bootcamp even as we speak. I hope God blesses you richly for what you are giving to our men, women and as a mother my boys.

Ms. Melgosa, Thank you so much for your generosity to those who have lost their son, daughters, fathers, brothers, mothers and sisters in these trying times. I have two children, one daughter and one son, both United States Marines and I thank God every day that I know that another day has passed without harm to them. You, my dear Lorraine, are one of a kind. Thank You and May God Bless You! Sincerely, A Marine Mom

Funeral thank you notes can be a hard thing to write. It’s hard to express the type of emotions people feel about the loss of a loved one. You don’t want to be too harsh. You want to come off as dignified as possible. This person you lost may have really meant something to you. How do you thank others for being there when you lost that person so close to you when all you want to do is crawl in a hole and be left alone?

Just read a great book on helping kids with grief. It's called A Healing Place. Got it in my local bookstore in MD but is available nationwide and on Amazon, etc. Great, practical guide on how to help. Incredibly helpful and life affirming. I got it for my cousin after the loss of his wife. Author founded grief charity in Atlanta that has done great things for kids and families.

I would certainly agree with Laurie and Bradley. Personally, I am a whole body donor to a medical school for gross anatomy dissection, and the current disposition of all donors involves cremating their remains for a common burial after studies are completed. Just ahead of the ecologically-sensitive curve, The University of Florida and Mayor Clinic employ alkaline hydrolysis units as a form of chemical 'cremation'. I would have no problem consenting to my remains being dissolved after my cadaver is dissected, with the liquid residue going into sewage, and my commingled 'ashes' used to fertilize plants in a memorial garden.

Is there anywhere to find information on the history of women in the undertaking profession? In researching my family history, I've recently encountered a relative - I think - who was a female undertaker listed in the 1899 Trow's Business Directory (http://books.google.com/books?id=gPkvAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_navlinks_s#v=onepage&q=&f=false). She's not the only woman there, but she's one of very few. I'm interested in learning more about the historical profession and especially about women as undertakers.

If you do have the time to send further information, I can be reached at kathleen.scarlett.ohara AT gmail.com
