What is a Cloisonne Urn?
Cloisonne is a custom work of art created by shaping thin silver wires into an attractive design, which is attached by soldering to a metal object, typically made of bronze, copper or silver. The History of Cloisonne and Cloisonne Urns
Derived from the French word cloison, meaning division or partition, Cloisonne is also known as inlaid enamel. Although the word Cloisonne originated in 18th century France, archeological findings reveal that Cloisonne is a centuries-old art form dating at least to ancient Greece.
Missionaries are believed to have brought Cloisonne-making techniques to China in the 14th to 15th century AD. There, the Chinese continued to improve the enameling method with their advanced metallurgical technology and manufacturing capabilities, eventually perfecting the art and making it their own. Today Cloisonne is used in making jewelry, vases, boxes, kitchenware and flatware, as well as cremation urns, which are believed to be among the earliest Cloisonne objects produced by the Chinese.
