What is a Cloisonne Urn?
Cloisonne is a custom work of art created by shaping thin silver wires into an attractive design, which is attached by soldering to a metal object, typically made of bronze, copper or silver. The spaces of the design are then filled with the richly colored enamels that give each Cloisonne rendition its unique appearance, and the Cloisonne is kiln fired and polished to a smooth and lustrous finish. Finally, when the artwork is complete, the Cloisonne cremation urn is mounted on a hand-carved wooden base.
Although Cloisonne's exceptional durability makes it suitable for burial, most people prefer to think of a Cloisonne cremation urn as a memorial to their loved one, with its exquisite beauty and timeless elegance displayed prominently in their home. Care properly for your Cloisonne urn by simply dusting the surface with a soft cloth, and it will hold a place of honor in your family for generations to come.
The History of Cloisonne and Cloisonne Urns
Derived from the French word cloison, meaning division or partition, Cloisonne is also known as inlaid enamel. Although the word Cloisonne originated in 18th century France, archeological findings reveal that Cloisonne is a centuries-old art form dating at least to ancient Greece.
Missionaries are believed to have brought Cloisonne-making techniques to China in the 14th to 15th century AD. There, the Chinese continued to improve the enameling method with their advanced metallurgical technology and manufacturing capabilities, eventually perfecting the art and making it their own. Today Cloisonne is used in making jewelry, vases, boxes, kitchenware and flatware, as well as cremation urns, which are believed to be among the earliest Cloisonne objects produced by the Chinese.
Choosing a Cloisonne Cremation Urn
With sizes from small keepsake and sharing urns to standard size decorative urns, Cloisonne urns are available at prices to fit any budget and in designs to appeal to any personal taste. Designs include everything from simple portrayals of doves, hearts, or flowers to the intricate, ornate patterns that are most frequently identified with traditional Cloisonne.
The nature of a Cloisonne urn is such that each one is unique—the working of the pattern and the color variances in the enamel distinguish each finished piece from all the others. To further personalize your Cloisonne urn, you may choose to have it engraved. The name of the deceased as well as information such as date of birth and death or a favorite quote, can be etched directly on the urn in some cases, or on a plate to be affixed to the urn or the wooden base.
