About Granite Urns
Granite has been used for centuries as a building material and is a very popular choice for monuments and gravestones. It stands up very well under normal weather conditions, which makes it particularly good for outdoor use. Granite urns take advantage of these properties, resulting in an attractive and very tough stone urn that can be kept either indoors or outside.
Some of the most beautiful granite urns are made from naturally quarried stone that has been polished by hand. Often, the texture of the stone is used as a feature of the urn. Because the urns are made from natural rock, each one varies in terms of its exact colors and patterns, although black, brown, and rose are common main hues.
Virtually any type of image can be engraved into granite, making this stone an excellent choice for those who want to personalize an urn. Along with the traditional name and dates, granite urns can be engraved with images and even photos and custom portraits. Photo engraving works best on black granite, where the contrast is more distinct.
Choosing an Urn
Before you choose your granite urn, read our article on how to select the right size cremation urn. Here, you'll find helpful tips on the different urn sizes and the volume of cremains that each will hold. The most important thing to remember is that you'll have about 1 cubic inch of cremains for every 1 pound of weight at the time of cremation. In other words, a 180 pound person will need an urn that holds at least 180 cubic inches. It's best to allow for a little extra room in the urn.
If you're planning on keeping the urn outside, granite is a good choice of materials. It's important to note that it will experience some weathering over time. Make sure that the urn you choose has a liner and can be permanently closed with a silicone sealant to protect the contents.
Enter in an approximate weight of your loved one before cremation and we will tell you the size needed.

Choosing the right size urn is easy. For every one pound before cremation you will need 1 cubic inch of volume. For example, a loved one weighing 200 pounds will need an urn that is at least 200 cubic inches or larger. Choosing an urn larger then you need is OK.
