Also called nacre, mother of pearl is a natural substance that's formed by mollusks as part of their inner shell. This is the same material that makes up the outer coating of pearls. It's strong and iridescent, and it makes a beautiful addition to a funeral urn. A mother of pearl urn will typically be made of a base material, and have the nacre added as a decorative element.

Mother of pearl has been prized for its beauty for centuries, often being used in clothing, jewelry, and even musical instruments. On a mother of pearl urn, small pieces of nacre are attached as an inlay, placed into a depression in the urn to leave them flush with the surface. This allows one or more bands of mother of pearl to circle the urn with little risk that the pieces will be damaged.

The Beauty of Mother of Pearl

Because mother of pearl is a natural material, every piece is slightly different. This makes each mother of pearl urn unique. The pieces are typically varying shades of white, cream, silver, and beige, although they have an iridescent quality that often reveals different colors from different angles. Nacre is rarely all one color, with lines and layers obvious in many pieces.

Mother of pearl urns often have a base metal of brass, which can be given a silver or gold finish. In a traditional vase urn, the cremains are added by removing the screw on lid on the top of the vase. You may also want an urn bag to protect the urn itself and keep it looking beautiful.

Urn Personalizing

Depending on the exact urn you choose, you may be able to add custom engraving directly to the metal. The mother of pearl itself cannot be engraved on. You can also select an urn pendant to hang around the neck of your urn and have it engraved separately, should you choose.

Urn Sizes

Mother of pearl urns come in both standard and keepsake form, depending on your needs. Standard urns can hold between 130 and 250 cubic inches of cremains, depending on the size that you choose. You'll want at least 1 cubic inch of volume for each pound the deceased weighed before cremation, and it's better to have a little extra space.

Many people like to share the cremains among family members and other loved ones, and this is where keepsake or sharing urns are a wonderful option. They hold only a small amount of cremains, often as little as 3 cubic inches. Some small sharing urns hold between 30 and 50 cubic inches. This is not enough space for the ashes of most full-grown adults, but it's perfect for holding just a portion of the cremains.
