About Salt Urns

Crafted from solid blocks of Himalayan salt, a salt urn is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind container to hold the ashes of a loved one. These cremation urns are completely biodegradable and will dissolve completely in water after several hours. Because they are made from natural materials, no two are exactly alike.

Salt urns are an excellent choice for water burials, as the entire container will dissolve slowly in water over about 4 hours. As long as they are protected from moisture, however, these beautiful urns can also be placed on display in a home. The lid does not seal on its own, however, as these urns are made from natural materials.

The Beauty of Himalayan Salt

Himalayan salt, which is mined in the Punjab region of Pakistan, is considered some of the purest rock salt in the world. It often contains many different minerals in addition to sodium chloride, including iron oxide, which can give the salt a pink or red color. Because the blocks of salt have been forming under the earth for millions of years, it is argued, it has not been exposed to modern pollutants and toxins. Many people believe that salt from this region offers health and wellness benefits.

The minerals in the salt from this region often give it a pink color with bands or veins of darker red. A salt urn made from Himalayan salt preserves these colorful elements, often giving it unique stripes and patterns. The translucent nature of this salt means that light can pass through, adding to the beauty of a salt urn.

Choosing a Salt Urn

Because they are made of rock salt, salt urns may be heavier than many other types of biodegradable urns. Each one also features unique colors and patterns in the material.

When choosing your salt urn, you'll need to consider both the size you need and what you plan on doing with the urn. Salt urns are available in both keepsake and standard sizes, depending on the amount of cremains that you need to hold. Smaller keepsake urns are only meant to hold a very small amount of ashes that have been shared among friends or family members. If you are looking for an urn that can hold all of the cremains, make sure that the volume of the urn in cubic inches is equal to or larger than the weight in pounds of the individual before cremation. In other words, if the deceased weighed 150 pounds, you'll need an urn that can hold at least 150 cubic inches of cremains.

Salt urns are biodegradable and will dissolve when exposed to water. This makes them an excellent choice for water burials. When the urn is buried in the ground, it will also dissolve slowly as it's exposed to moisture.

If you do not plan on burying the salt urn or putting it in water, it's important to store it in a location where it will not be exposed to water or high moisture levels.

Choosing the right size urn is easy. For every one pound before cremation you will need 1 cubic inch of volume. For example, a loved one weighing 200 pounds will need an urn that is at least 200 cubic inches or larger. Choosing an urn larger then you need is OK.
