Stone cremation urns are favored for their classic beauty and strength. In the minds of many, the ability of stone to withstand centuries of wear and exposure to the elements symbolizes eternity. Natural Stone Urns

Several types of natural stone are used in the creation of stone cremation urns.

Granite Urns– Granite as a construction material can be traced to the 26th century BC, when it was used in the Egyptian pyramids. Many of the Hindu temples of the 11th century were also made of granite. The same durability and beauty that make granite an ideal material for monuments make it an excellent material for stone cremations urns.

Onyx Urns – Onyx is a gemstone distinguished by its alternating light and dark bands, which may be found in a range of colors. Traditionally, onyx is said to banish grief, which may be significant in its use in creating stone cremation urns.

Alabaster Urns– Alabaster has been used since biblical times to create vases, statues and religious decorations. Ancient alabaster was formed from calcite, while the alabaster that is used in stone urns today is formed almost exclusively from gypsum.

Sandstone Urns– Sandstone is formed as layers of sand and minerals are compacted by the pressure of overlying deposits of sand and minerals. Typically resistant to weathering yet easy to work with, sandstone readily lends itself to being crafted into a cremation urn.

Marble Urns – Marble cremation urns are among the most beautiful to be found. Marble is formed from limestone through the process of metamorphosis. Polished marble is frequently used in buildings, furniture, or decorative art, as well as stone urns. Cremation urns may be turned from a solid block of marble or fabricated from pieces of marble.

Caring for Stone Urns

Whether a stone urn is made from granite, onyx, marble or alabaster, the method of care is essentially the same. Always avoid the use of abrasive or acidic cleaners, which may scratch or damage the surface of the urn. Instead, use a soft cloth and a mild cleaner; make sure to dry the stone completely afterward to avoid water stains.

Choosing the right size urn is easy. For every one pound before cremation you will need 1 cubic inch of volume. For example, a loved one weighing 200 pounds will need an urn that is at least 200 cubic inches or larger. Choosing an urn larger then you need is OK.
