Wood Cremation Urns
Learn about Wood Cremation UrnsThe same timeless qualities that have made wood a traditional favorite for the construction of furniture and caskets make wood cremation urns a popular choice today. Wood urns have a natural, rich beauty that evokes feelings of warmth, comfort, and strength.
Styles of Wood Urns
Wood cremation urns come in a wide range of grain patterns and wood species, including:
- Walnut – an even-grained wood with a deep brown color
- Cherry – can vary from light to deep in color, with the darker shades resembling mahogany
- Oak – a very sturdy hardwood with a golden color
- Mahogany – a beautiful hardwood with a deep, dark reddish color
- Pine – a soft wood, typically light in color, with dark knots
- Maple – a hard, dense, light-colored wood
- Rosewood – a very heavy and oily wood, rosewood is beautiful without any stain or finish applied
- Teak – a durable hardwood with a deep, yellowish-brown color
The styles and shapes of wood urns are as varied as the color and grain of the woods that are used in their creation. They may be assembled into chests or hand carved with precise detail. Wood urns may be inlaid with geometric patterns or motifs representing religious icons. Vase-shaped urns are created by turning the wood on a lathe.
Wood urns can also be personalized by engraving, either with the name and other information about the deceased, or with detailed, laser-engraved designs. In some cases, an engraved nameplate or medallion can be attached to a wood urn or hung around its neck.
Some wood urns are created to serve an additional function; picture frames, photo cubes, and clock holders, for example, all make wonderful keepsakes.
Wood Urns: A Natural Choice
Concern for the environment is one of the reasons most often cited for choosing cremation. And for people who choose cremation as a more “natural” alternative to burial, a wood cremation urn is the next logical choice. Wood is, after all, a renewable natural resource, and many wood urns are handcrafted. In addition, because each piece of wood is naturally unique in grain and color, each wood cremation urn is a unique piece of art—as unique, in fact, as the person whose remains it holds.
Caring for Wood Urns
Properly cared for, wood cremation urns will retain their beauty and character forever. Because exposure can speed the aging of wood, wood urns should be kept indoors, away from water and direct sunlight. Use a soft, dry cloth and furniture polish or wood cleaner to maintain the wood’s natural beauty; avoid abrasive cleaners, which may damage the finish of the wood urn.
If you plan to bury rather than display a wood urn, you may want to consider enclosing it in an urn burial vault. Some people choose a vault because the cemetery requires it, while others choose a vault to protect the wood from the elements. When a wood cremation urn is buried, unprotected, in the earth, exposure to moisture will weaken the wood.

Choosing the right size urn is easy. For every one pound before cremation you will need 1 cubic inch of volume. For example, a loved one weighing 200 pounds will need an urn that is at least 200 cubic inches or larger. Choosing an urn larger then you need is OK.
